What do people who spell ‘not winning’ as loose think when they see the word lose?
You know they’ve seen the word lose many, many times and must know it means to not win. “Reds lose in extra innings to the Padres” … you know they’ve seen it as lose a shit-ton of times … but then they use loose anyway for some unknown chromosomal reason.
They probably think ‘I wonder why the professional, educated writer always misspells loose – what a dummy?” And then they head off to the Trump rally.
They know lose is an actual word and they’ve seen it over and over so one does wonder but they think lose actually means if they use loose as not winning? Do they pronounce it like hose or chose? But what the hell would lose pronounced like you pronounce hose actually mean? It would sound like you would need to go buy a pair of pliers at Lowe’s because a bolt is loose (or lose) – fuck … whatever.
And they also know that ‘not tight’ is loose but spell it the same as not winning lose and it doesn’t ever click with them. Extra credit is when the dummy conjugates it to looser.
You see this sort of brilliance on a message board when someone insults another person and says “Your a looser” (which is a sentence that gets you a Corner Office inside Darwin’s Waiting Room).
One day it may get better … or more likely, it’s a loost cause?
